The U.S. Department of State leads America's foreign policy through diplomacy, advocacy, and assistance by advancing the interests of the American people, their safety and economic prosperity.
GPS Roles and Responsibilities
- Promotes U.S. foreign policy objectives within the National Executive Committee and the GPS community.
- Leads international consultations and negotiations with other nations on GPS-related issues.
- Chairs the GPS International Working Group (GIWG).
- Works with the National Coordination Office to plan and coordinate international GPS outreach activities.
- Supports and participates in the International Committee on GNSS (ICG).
- Leads U.S. delegations to the World Radio Conferences of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), where spectrum allocations affecting GPS are negotiated.
- Handles export licensing for military GPS technology.
- Supports the use of GPS for a broad variety of governmental activities, including delimitation of boundaries, fisheries enforcement, health information tracking, remote sensing, and geographic information systems.
